Alexander Hamilton was chosen as Washington’s secretary of the Treasury. The Mexican government was concerned about the amount of Americans migrating to Texas in 1830. The Underground Railroad was a interracial network of people who helped slaves reach the North. The Louisiana Purchase, which cost $15 million, was the largest land deal in history.

Andrew Jackson, the president elected in 1828, was called “man of the people.” The American System was proposed to fund a national transportation system. Abraham Lincoln’s presidency led to the seceding of seven states. The gold rush of California prompted thousands of people to migrate there in 1848. Douglas Fredrickson ran the Underground Railroad. Texas won independence from Mexico at the Battle of San Jacinto. Thomas Jefferson believed in limited powers for the government. Sectionalism preceded the creation of two political parties.
