Two Views of Intelligence Which mindset do you have?
STRENGTHENING YOUR BRAIN LIKE YOU STRENGTHEN YOUR MUSCLES Lesson 2
Presentation transcript:

Which mindset do you have? Read each statement and decide whether you mostly agree with it or disagree with it. Your intelligence is something very basic about you that you can’t change very much. You can learn new things, but you can’t really change how intelligent you are. No matter how much intelligence you have, you can always change it quite a bit. You can always substantially change how intelligent you are. You are a certain kind of person, and there is not much that can be done to really change that. No matter what kind of person you are, you can always change substantially. You can do things different, but the important parts of who you are can’t really be changed. You can always change basic things about the kind of person you are.

Thinking about mindset… Imagine you’ve decided to learn a new language and you’ve signed up for a class. A few sessions into the course, the instructor calls you to the front of the room and starts throwing questions at you one after another. In a fixed mindset your ability is on the line. In a growth mindset you’re a novice – that’s why you are there. You’re there to learn.

…every word and action can send a message …every word and action can send a message. It tells children – or students, or athletes – how to think about themselves. It can be a fixed-mindset message that says: You have permanent traits and I’m judging them. Or it can be a growth-mindset message that says: You are a developing person and I am interested in your development.
