Presentation transcript:

Qualities of a Good Student Leader Leadership is one of the key factors for success in the canvassing work with students. When things happen in the field, they do not happen by chance. First, they happen because of God´s blessings. Secondly, they happen because there is a leader behind the programs and actions that lead into success. To a great extent, the success of a publishing director depends on the leaders that he chooses to work under him. Thus, it is part of his responsibilities to constantly select, train, and develop leaders. The student leaders also impact the leadership of the publishing department, as many of them become publishing directors after finishing their studies.

Qualities of a Good Student Leader Some Quotes on Leadership: As we look ahead into the next century, leaders will be those who empower others. — Bill Gates Leadership is the key to 99 percent of all successful efforts. —Erskine Bowles Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others. — Jack Welch A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way. — John Maxwell The key to successful leadership today is influence, not authority. — Kenneth Blanchard

Seven qualities of a good student leader: 7. Has suitable leadership skills Determination, equilibrium, good reputation Integrity, punctually, hard working Good communication, confidence, good self-esteem Humility, positive attitude, creativity, steadiness, etc.

How to look for and find student leaders: Keep an eye on the students who are successful and spiritual. In general, successful and spiritual student LEs can become good student leaders. Keep an eye on the students who get involved and who are committed to help and participate in the publishing activities developed and offered on campus. Talk with students, existing student leaders, deans of the dorms and teachers in general to get their recommendation and names of possible student leaders.

How to look for and find student leaders: Work with the existing team leaders in order to appoint an associate student leader in each team. These associate leaders will become team leaders. When visiting the campus, make sure to set aside some time to find potential leaders. After you get referrals, visit them individually to invite them for leadership. Whenever possible, invite potential student leaders to come to your office or even to eat a meal together, for them to feel special and for the conversation to be solemn and important.

How to look for and find student leaders: When visiting potential student leaders, give them a Colporteur Ministry book, read some quotes by Ellen White about the importance of the canvassing work, and make an official invitation and appeal for them to become leaders. Then, pray with them and ask God to guide their decision. At times, a potential leader needs to reflect and “digest” the invitation before giving an answer. This is okay. However, make sure you follow up with them until you can get their decision.

How to look for and find student leaders: At times, it may take 2-3 years until a potential leader finally accepts to become a student leader. However, it is part of the responsibility of a publishing director to constantly look for, recruit, and train leaders. It is not easy to find student leaders with all these qualifications. The most important is to find students that have the “potential” and at least a core of these qualifications. Then, after they become leaders they will develop the other characteristics that will make them more complete.

Ellen G. White summarizes the characteristics of canvassers (applicable also for leaders) in the following way: “In all parts of the field canvassers should be selected, not from the floating element in society, not from among men and women who are good for nothing else and have made a success of nothing, but from among those who have good address, tact, keen foresight, and ability. Such are needed to make a success as colporteurs, canvassers, and agents.” (Colporteur Ministry, p. 28)
