What is heart rate? Stay in Shape Heart rate can be defined as the number of times the heart beats per minute. It is determined by finding the pulse which is an area on the outside of the body where the beats can be felt.

Can you find your pulse? Your pulse can be found in any place where the artery is compressed against a bone. For this activity try using your wrist or neck.

Calculating your heart rate Steps to finding your heart rate: Find your pulse Count the number of beats per fifteen seconds Multiply the number from step 2 by four Example: if the number of beats in step 2 is 13, then 13 x 4 = 52 beats per minute

What makes your heart rate increase? There are various factors besides exercise that cause an increased heart rate. A few examples are stress, fear, and laughing. Exercise is important because the heart needs to be strong enough to pump blood to the body. Video Exercise How does your heart rate change after watching this video?

How do you keep your heart healthy? Balanced Diet Game Help Adam Eat Right! To keep your heart healthy for the future you should exercise regularly, practice careful eating routines, and avoid bad habits such as smoking.

What you have learned… An overview of this lesson shows that we learned the definition of a heart rate and a pulse. You should also be able to find and calculate your pulse. In doing the follow up activity you will be able to compare your resting heart rate and your active heart rate.
