Rise of Communism in Russia Sharon Armstrong, Jessalyn Delor

Who? Karl Marx proposed idea of communism in his book, “Communist Manifesto”, 1848. Vladimir Lenin was the first to practice Marx’s ideas, 1917.

What? Communism in Russia. When? 1848 – 1900s. Where? Russia. Why? Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels wanted the gap between rich and poor to be eliminated and society to live in harmony. How? Russia was renamed the Soviet Union after the Communist Revolution in 1917.

How did the Russians feel? The majority of Russians did not want Communism. There was major poverty.

Interesting Facts Many people had to leave their homes and move to apartments controlled by the government. The government controlled industries and caused a widespread famine leading to death.
