Do I Have Enough Paper? A PBL on Surface Area

View this video with your partner http://www.mathvillage.info/node/116 Take notes on the problem in the video and record in your interactive notebook.

Task Card 2 You need to wrap this present, using the tissue paper found on task card 3. The game box is a square and one side measures 22 inches.

Task Card 3

Task Card 4 Do you think this paper will be enough to cover the game without taping sheets together? Write down your initial guess on paper.

Task Card 5 What information would you like to know? What can you deduce from the pictures? Discuss these questions with your partner.

Task Card 6 Now, use what you know about surface area and SHOW ALL WORK on your paper, and see if you will be able to wrap the game with just ONE sheet of the paper.

Task card 7 If this size tissue/wrapping paper isn’t enough, then you and your partner ANALYZE & CONCLUDE (level 4 DOK) roughly what minimum size wrapping will completely wrap this box.

Task Card 8 Now, you and your partner need to find 3 rectangular boxes/items that could be wrapped with one sheet of the tissue paper. Give the dimensions of the boxes and SHOW the calculations you used to make sure it will fit.

Task Card 9 Now, complete the Socrative entitled Surface Area 
