ASDPE Regional Plan for Strengthening the National Influenza Surveillance Capacity: Guiding the way towards a comprehensive National Influenza Surveillance System (NISS) Emerging Disease Surveillance & Response (ESR) WHO Western Pacific Regional Office (WPRO)

Emerging Disease Surveillance and Response (ESR) WHO Western Pacific Regional Office (WPRO) Regional Plan for Strengthening the National Influenza Surveillance Capacity Goal in 2007: To develop and sustain comprehensive national influenza surveillance systems through enhancing/strengthening the capacities of the National Influenza Centers and associated epidemiology programmes

Emerging Disease Surveillance and Response (ESR) WHO Western Pacific Regional Office (WPRO) GISN in WPRO and SEARO, NICs in 13 countries in the Western Pacific Region and 8 NICs in 6 countries in the South East Asia Region 2 WHO Collaborating Centres (Australia and Japan)

Emerging Disease Surveillance and Response (ESR) WHO Western Pacific Regional Office (WPRO) Workplan and Expected Outcomes by Improving virological testing capacity in the National Influenza Centers –Virus isolation using cell culture or egg embryo –Typing/subtyping using standard WHO reagents –Regular submission to WHO CC representative strain and immediate submission of non-typable viruses –Molecular diagnostic capacity such as real-time PCR for seasonal influenza and H5N1 –Meet the EQA standard

Emerging Disease Surveillance and Response (ESR) WHO Western Pacific Regional Office (WPRO) Workplan and Expected Outcomes by Better understanding the epidemiology of influenza through link of virological and epidemiological surveillance for influenza - step by step approach to strengthen the capacities –Able to conduct outbreak investigations –Able to analyse and interpret the ILI data to understand the seasonality and to report to FluNet –Determine the proportion of influenza among ILI cases –Describe the seasonality, incidence, age distribution, risk group in various population and geographic locations

Emerging Disease Surveillance and Response (ESR) WHO Western Pacific Regional Office (WPRO) Workplan and Expected Outcomes by Improving early detection of human avian influenza cases or clusters –Capacity of surveillance for Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (e.g. atypical pneumonia, ARDS, etc.) 4. Contributing to the national rapid response and containment as well as pandemic preparedness planning –Specific roles and responsibilities of National Influenza Center are identified in the national rapid response and containment plan –Specific roles and responsibilities of National Influenza Center are identified in the national pandemic preparedness plan
