Point of View Definition: Vantage Point Perspective Point of view is the vantage point from which a story is told. In the first person point of view, the story is told by one of the characters. Point of View In the first-person point of view, the story is told by one of the characters. The character uses pronouns such as I or me and usually is in much, if not all, of the action in the story. The narrator is a character in the story. The character/protagonist must experience everything with his/her senses or be told about something. As the reader, you experience the story only from what that character knows, thinks, and feels.

Point of View In the third-person point of view, the story is told by a narrator who is not a character in the story. Depending on the type of third person point of view, the narrator may reveal -- the thoughts and feelings of: 1) only one character, or 2), all characters or 3) they may only be able to report what is seen or heard, like a reporter.

A good writer can tell a completely objective story in which the reader is able to determine the feelings and sometimes even the thoughts of the characters through what those characters say and do.
