On Road Assessment Main points for today: Indicators Preparation Driving Instructor- role Feedback Report

We have a legal and ethical obligation to ensure the safety of other road users as well as our patient/ client.  

Indicators for assessment: Age related deterioration Medication Drug/ Alcohol use Physical limitations/ disability Visual deficits Brain Injury Medical conditions with progressive deterioration e.g. multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy Psychiatric conditions

Preparation: Pre- appointment APPOINTMENT: Interview Functional Assessment- range of movement, strength, coordination, sensation > need for vehicle modification Plan assessment route (with driving instructor)

Assessment: Transfers Use of controls Assessment process/ progress Traffic/ Road Conditions Monitor for, for example, pain, fatigue

Habitual Errors: don’t compromise safety Hazardous Errors: - verbal prompt from DI Critical Errors: -DI physical intervention required Failure to observe critical features (signs/ markings), signs, hazards Failure to observe critical features that affect driving safety Any of the errors listed requiring physical intervention to avoid an incident Too fast/ slow when approaching intersections Late braking at intersections Reduced buffer zones Inadequate scanning Errors in use of indicator Incorrect vehicle position Inadequate mirror/ blind spot checks Failure to select an appropriate gap at intersections and lane changes Poor control of vehicle controls Driving too fast/ slow Incorrect hand position on steering wheel Errors in vehicle positioning

Driving Instructor role: Provide a driving environment that enables client to familiarise themselves with vehicle/ vehicle modifications…address anxiety/ nervousness. Maintain safety of the vehicle and its occupants with minimum degree of intervention. Observe aspects OT is unable to observe. Support the OT in the feedback session. Remedial driving tuition- WHEN and HOW?

Report: Database details: client, their DOB, address, contact details (NOK?), reason for referral/ diagnosis, referrer Medical data (current and historical) Driving History Need for driving and driving support available Physical screen Medication Pain Vision and hearing Body of report: Introduction: Vehicle used and who attended, time of day, weather conditions, road situations encountered, speed zones covered Assessment process Areas of concern Statement regarding driving ability (consistent/ adequate, inconsistent) Summary of cognitive (if applicable) and On Road results. Do results of each component support each other, and if not, why? Remedial driving tuition indicated? Recommendation/s
