Science Learning Standards Implementation Timeline

Grades 5 and 8 Science Assessments Heard loud and clear from Science educators across the state that performance tests should still be a part of new tests. Mindful of the impact that changes will have on schools related to purchased and SED will take that into account. Computer based ONLY IF funding available Timeline Assessment Highlights: May/June 2022: First administration of grade 5 and 8 Science Tests June 2023 First administrations of Earth & Space Science and Life Sciences: Biology Regents Exams June 2024: First administrations of Physical Sciences: Chemistry and Physics

ESSA: Suspension Data & Accountability Status Beginning with 2018-19 results, a Level 1-4 will be reported for each accountability group on the Out-of-School Suspension indicator. Out-of-school suspension rate is calculated by dividing the number of students who were suspended from school (not including in-school suspensions) for one full day or longer anytime during the school by the number of students enrolled on BEDS day of that school year. A student is counted only once, regardless of whether the student was suspended one or more times during the school year. Students who are suspended for a half day should NOT be reported as suspended for that day.

Operationalizing Proposed Part 121 of the Regulations related to Ed Law 2D

Status Update Published January 31st in the State Register Public comment period open for 60 days (currently feedback has been consistent on the need for time to implement) If no material revisions are needed, rule will be presented to the Regents for adoption on May 6th If adopted, it becomes effective July 1st SED will continue to work with workgroup and stakeholders to develop resources for implementation

DPO: Data Protection Officer Workgroup currently providing feedback to Outline of Role and Responsibilities for this position Current Considerations: Need for LEA’s July reorganizational meetings It is recommended that the DPO report to the Superintendent. If the DPO fulfils additional roles, reporting to the superintendent may be restricted to the DPO role only. It is recommended that the DPO also present an annual report to the Board of Education on the agency’s data security and privacy posture.

DPO: Data Protection Officer Current DRAFT of Considerations for Responsibilities: Serve as the primary point of contact for the State Education Department’s Chief Privacy Officer. Coordinate the implementation of the policies and procedures required under Education Law 2-d and Part 121 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education and monitor compliance. Develop a procedure for parents and eligible students to file complaints about breaches or unauthorized releases of student data. Deliver an annual information privacy and security awareness training to officers and employees with access to personally identifiable information.
