Louis XV The Decline

Louis XV (1710-1774) Was known initially as Louis “the beloved” Eventually became one of the most hated kings of France

Political Life Louis is known to have over 15 mistresses throughout his reign These mistresses exerted great control over the King Mistresses were very domineering often choosing the minister of states Mistresses fought constantly for power Subjects not happy with debauchery of the court Louis also had family that was constantly trying through intrigue to ascend to the throne Usually referred to advisors for major decisions Politically a weak and indecisive

7 Years War (1756-1763) War between England and France England wins France looses many of its colonies including New France Less trade, less money, less resources

Conclusion While known to be a smart cultured King, Louis really didn’t take action on many things in his life Attempts at reform were abandoned, governance was given to advisors and mistresses The “absence” of a ruling king was to be the beginning of the end of the Absolute Monarchy in France
