Heroes We Hope and Fear For When creating your hero, audience connection is key. Your hero needs to be interesting. Somebody who wants something badly and is having trouble getting it. The audience has to care about them. They hope they will obtain the main objective but fear the goal will be thwarted – by external forces or by the hero him/herself.

My Hero / Main Character Think of a main character, and develop him/her. Start with the name or personality, and work from there. Name Age – Most children like a couple of years older than themselves Eye colour Hair / skin / fur colour Weakness

Their main problem or issue Make a list of possible problems or situations that can be included throughout your story and pick the best idea. Figure out how your problem can be solved. Research on the topic if possible, and try to include something educational and interesting.

Begin with a bang. Your readers will stick around for the first few sentences, but if they're not hooked they'll close the book. So make those sentences count. Start your story with action, dialogue, or set the mood in a way that's so intriguing kids can't walk away. You want to begin as close as possible to the story's catalyst, that moment in which your character's life changes from ordinary to extraordinary, and the plot takes off.
