Building Blocks of All Mankind Matter Building Blocks of All Mankind

Essential Standards 6.P.2: Understand the structure, classifications and physical properties of matter.

Clarifying Objectives 6.P.2.1: Recognize that all matter is made up of atoms and atoms of the same element are all alike, but are different from the atoms of other elements.

Essential Questions What is an atom? What is an element?

Matter All Galaxies, humans, stars, animals (anything) is composed of matter Everything is made of matter Atoms are a type of matter The smallest matter that everything is composed of is called an atom

Physical Properties of Matter Physical Properties can be observed without changing the identity of the element Physical Properties of matter are characteristics that been felt, measured or seen… Color Odor Luster Conductivity Hardness Melting Point Boiling Point Density (M/V) Mass Volume Weight Length

Chemical Properties of Matter Chemical Properties refer to an elements ability to change into a new substance Flammability Reactivity

Galaxies Scientists estimate that there are about 325 billion different galaxies Each galaxies has its own set of planets We live in the Milky Way Galaxy

Beginning of Time The Universe explodes into being Galaxies are created. Trillions of stars line the galaxies Around one star in one galaxy a blue planet appears

Atom

Atoms All life stems from atoms Atoms are the smallest particles of matter that has the same chemical makeup All matter is made up of atoms

Atoms Nucleus- Middle of the atom contains the Protons & Neutrons Protons (+) Positively charged part of the atom located in the nucleus Neutrons (no charge) Neutral part of the atom located in the nucleus Electrons (-) negatively charged located outside the valence

Atoms Atoms are too small to be seen through a microscope If you put billions of the same type of atom together you get an element

Essential Questions Get with a partner and answer… What is an atom?

Groups of Atoms Elements, Molecules & Compounds

Elements

Elements An element is a substance that is made up of only one kind of atom The element of iron is different from the element of nickel because their atoms are different Elements can’t be broken down into something similar

Elements There are about 100 different kinds of elements known to mankind They are found on the Periodic Table Elements combine with each other to form Compounds

Elements When elements combine to form compound they can make both living & nonliving organisms

Making an Element To make the element gold…. All atoms must be the same (gold atoms) All the atoms that make up the element must have the same physical & chemical properties

Essential Questions Get with a partner and answer… What is an element?

Earth This blue planet is our Earth No other known planet has an atmosphere and liquid water which are the two conditions needed for life

Molecule

Molecules Molecules happen when different atoms are grouped together Water H2O… Two hydrogen atoms One oxygen atom

Compounds Compounds are combining or putting together many different molecules/elements together Humans are made up of many different compounds/elements Humans are made up of 6 basic elements… Carbon Hydrogen Oxygen Phosphorus Sulfur Nitrogen

EOG Questions What is composed of matter? What is true about the atoms & elements of two magnets when compared to each other?
