Space Study Task Force (2013) In 2013, at the request of the Provost, a multi-disciplinary Space Task Force was formed. The task force was directed to: recommend improvements to standards, practices, and processes affecting all Rice-owned spaces benchmark peer institutions to determine standards, decision processes, and best practices develop strategic approaches and processes to improve the use of existing space and to increase Rice’s ability to leverage space opportunities as they arise Among the Space Task Force’s recommendations to the Provost are the following: All instructional space falls under the authority of the Provost, who has delegated full responsibility for management to the Registrar. All space decisions should be made within the context of the strategic, financial, and campus master plans, and include a periodic review of the highest and best use of space. Priority in space allocation will be given to: Meeting a strategic need or programmatic goal Collaborative, shared, or multi-use spaces Improving efficiency or productivity Establishing/maintaining an inventory of “swing space” to meet emerging needs Limiting use of rental space Practices that support the Facilities and Administrative rate negotiations with the federal government

Classroom Task Force (2010) V2C’s enrollment increase made careful use of mission-critical classrooms even more important. V2C2 Progress: We must increase the size of the university to realizes more fully our ambition as an institution of national and international distinction that attracts the very best students and researchers from around the globe Fall 2004 = 2,845 Undergraduates / Fall 2016 = 3,408 Undergraduates Rice convened a task force to analyze classrooms, which organically developed into a consideration of the effect of class scheduling and seat availability of student success. Task force included representatives from: * Provost’s Office * Information Technology * Engineering * Registrar’s Office * Natural Sciences * Students * Facilities, Engineering, and Planning Task Force Recommendations Use of Standard Time Blocks to maximize students’ course options and classroom availability Use of Anchor Courses to provide stable base of large classes, around which other classes can be scheduled Implementation of 2/3 Rule to improve options available to students and to decrease likelihood of exhausting classroom supply during prime time periods Development of Web Application for Departmental Submission of Schedule Offerings to enforce 2/3 Rule and encourage use of Standard Time Blocks Temporary Removal of Classrooms from Inventory for Renovation to enable maintenance and renovation work to occur throughout the school year
