Presentation transcript:

Causes of recent climate change Starter: Use these labels and facts to draw and correctly annotate this diagram of the causes of climate change Methane= 20% of greenhouse gases Methane 20 times more potent than Co2 Reflected Greenhouse gases: CO2, Nitrous Oxide, Methane, H20 Absorbed Radiation atmosphere Escape China 75% of energy produced is from coal Greenhouse effect

New Zealand is one of the highest Greenhouse gas emitting nations BUT it has a population of only 4.1 million people….any ideas why??? A solution…. They wanted to impose a flatulence tax because 50% of New Zealand’s GHG emissions are methane This idea was however never passed http://www.climateavenue.com/methane.NZ.tax.fl.htm

METHANE Page 16 Draw a flow diagram that explains why growing populations have lead to an increase in methane emissions. [think about economic change, development and waste]

Page 15 Draw a flow diagram that explains why growing populations have lead to an increase in CO2 emissions. [think about economic change, development and waste] CO2

Describe how fossil fuels have caused this increase in CO2 (4) What example of fossil fuel could you use? Why have we got more CO2 in the atmosphere? How do fossil fuels lead to an increase in CO2? Use this fact ‘75% of energy in China is from Coal’ as part of answering this question PROPERLY!

Homework check through!

SMC Briefing notes questions: As you read through- highlight the evidence Name the 3 things that can cause climate change When was the last time the temperature rose this much? Define: a) albedo, b) aerosols How much has the average temperature increased by since 1900? What would happen if CO2 doubled? Describe ‘feedback’ To what extent are we adapted for these climatic changes? What was ‘climate gate’? To what extent have our ‘poor summers’ been a result of climate change? What’s happened to the rate of warming? Will there be any positive effects? Where will be the most effected by climate change? Why?

Using YOUR KNOWLEDGE you need to create a chain of effects to answer: Cause 1. Effect 2. Effect 3. Effect Then you need to think about the location that these effects might take place. Once you have done a chain then write it up answering this question: ‘Describe two negative effects that climate change is having on the environment’ (4)
