MakerBot Replicator 2 Notes

How does it work? The MakerBot Replicator 2 makes solid, three-dimensional objects out of melted MakerBot PLA Filament. Your 3D design files are translated into instructions for the MakerBot Replicator 2 and sent to the machine via USB cable or SD Card. Then the MakerBot Replicator 2 heats the MakerBot PLA Filament and squeezes it out through a nozzle to make a solid object layer by layer. This method is called Fused Filament Fabrication [FFF].

Gantry System

Gantry System The system of rods and belts that supports and moves the step struder where the cooling fan and extruder is housed.

Gantry System LCD Panel Key Pad

LCD & Keypad The LCD window displays directions and allows for easy knowledge on selections made by the keypad. The keypad consists of four arrow buttons that surround a central “M” button. The arrows are used to navigate through the LCD menus and make selections. A solid red M means the MakerBot is working. A blinking red M means the MakerBot waiting for user input.

Filament Guide Tube The filament tube starts back by the spool and leads the filament up above the Makerbot 2 and down into the extruder head.

Extruder Cable Filament Guide Tube Extruder

Extruder Cable The extruder cable starts in the back of the Makerbot 2 and goes up and over the bot next to the filament guide tube and then into the extruder.

Extruder The extruder assembly houses a fan, a heater and the extruder head through which the super heated filament comes through and creates your part.

Filament Spool & Spool Holder The filament spool is on the back of the Makerbot 2 and is held to the machine by the spool holder (which is in the center of the spool).
