Important to note (not in text) 1796: Almost 600 Jamaican Maroons land in Halifax & settle in Preston. Although the majority of the Maroons left NS for Sierra Leone in 1800, a few remained. A census done in 1817 revealed that several persons living in Tracadie (Guysborough) were descendants of the Maroons. The Maroons also left descendants in the Preston Area of Halifax County.
