Similarities They are both liquid at room temperature They both form bodies of water (oceans, lakes, rivers) They both support living species (ecosystems)

Differences Salt Water Fresh Water Salinity = 35 parts per thousand. There are many dissolves solids. The main two are sodium and chloride ions (these combine to form salt – (NaCl) Salinity = 200X less than salt water (hardly any salt!) More dense (1027 kg/m3) Less dense (1000 kg/m3) Freezing point - 1.9 C Freezing point 0 C Less buoyant (sinks in fresh water) More buoyant (floats in salt water)

Where Does the Salt Come From? 1. Water that has been running off the land and moving through the ground for millions of years It picks up materials from rocks that dissolve, and eventually ends up in the oceans. 2. Water evaporates from the oceans and goes through the water cycle again, but it leaves behind the dissolved solids, so they build up over time. 3. Volcanoes also contribute to salinity. Underwater volcanoes release sulfur, fluorine, chlorine, and hydrogen into ocean water. Land volcanoes spew similar materials into the atmosphere and these eventually end up in the oceans.
