Figure 1 TGF-β1-mediated activation of Wnt signaling leads to podocyte stress and injury. One hypothetical reason for reactivation of this developmental pathway could be the stimulation of progenitor cells for glomerular regeneration. A similar balance between podocyte death and repair has recently been shown for the Notch pathway.
