Ernest Hemingway His heroes are often wounded both physically and psychologically Hemmingway was wounded many times in life: war knee injury, car crashes, airplane crashes, shooting accidents, and fires. Hemmingway’s life resembled the lives of his fictional characters

Literary Terms Protagonist – The main character who initiates the story’s action. Hero – Responds to challenges with courage and self-sacrifice Not all protagonists are heroes. Antihero – Gives into disillusionment, hopelessness, and inaction.

Reading Skills Activity Identify Krebs’s feelings, attitudes, and views on the following topics: The war His return home His family Other people His hometown His future
