Economic Influence Anglo-Saxon Period

What was their Economic system? The Feudal System The Feudal system was a political & Economic system that William The Conqueror introduced into England after the Norman Conquest Some unmarried (usually upper class) women in Anglo-Saxon times inherited land at birth. This, of course, lead to many arranged marriages for land. Wars and family feuds forced females to play the role as “Peace-weavers” . They were often married to their families enemies to makes truce between tribes

Labor There were many black/bronze smith’s and potters who also created beautiful jewelry Many people worked just for food Food was mostly grown, such as wheat, barley, Rye, and they also caught fish

Technology Many buildings were built from timber, but as technology progressed many were built from stone and rock Buildings were always built near the land they farmed on

Currency They used Gold pieces , which soon disappeared and became silver, which were called “Sceattas”

Slavery The Anglo-Saxon’s word for slavery was “Briton” They thought that slavery was a normal thing in their working economy The most common types of slaves were the Penal Slaves : A person enslaved as a criminal penalty from crimes committed. Also during hard times, families sold themselves & family to survive

Trade Most supplies that were traded consisted of : salt, lead, and hone and building stone, wine, fish, flax, antler, etc Usually journeys for trade were very long so water was the preferred method of transportation, and trade posts were usually near rivers
