Convection Currents  An area of Earth’s surface is heated by the sun’s rays.  Air over heated surface expands and becomes less dense and the air pressure.
Heat, land and air Chapter 13. Remember Specific Heat Capacity! Near the surface: Air warms easier than water, and soil heats easier than air.
Land Breezes and Sea Breezes Sea Breeze. Sea Breeze: During the day, the land warms up faster than the water. The warm air over the land rises, while.
Air molecules travel from areas of high pressure (density) to areas of low density. WHY??? Because crowded (High pressure) molecules want to spread out.

Presentation transcript:

Specific Heat The amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1g of a substance by one degree Celsius *The higher the specific heat, the slower the heating AND cooling of a substance (“more stubborn”)*

Sea Breeze During the day, land heats quicker than water - Warm air over land rises - Rising air cools (and may condense) - Cooled air moves back over ocean and sinks Ocean is cooler compared to land (cold source, aka heat sink)

Land Breeze During the night, land cools quicker than water - Warm air over water rises - Rising air cools (and may condense) - Cooled air moves back over land and sinks
