Apply Social Work Ethical Principles to Guide Professional Practice Core Competency 2 Apply Social Work Ethical Principles to Guide Professional Practice

Practice Behavior 2.1 Recognize and manage personal values in a way that allows professional values to guide practice. We all have our own personal values that we live by; however, I feel that my personal values are very much like the professional values I have been taught. Therefore, I cannot see my personal values interfering with my professional values.

Practice Behavior 2.2 Make ethical decisions by applying standards of the NASW Code of Ethics and , as applicable, of the IFSW/International Federation of Social Work Ethics in Social Work, Statement of Principles I strongly believe in strictly adhering to the NASW Code of Ethics . I understand that matter how familiar we are with the Code, it should be revisited and reviewed should an ethical dilemma arise. This is why I keep a copy with me at all times during placement.

Practice Behavior 2.3 Tolerate ambiguity in resolving ethical conflicts When collaborating with a team of professionals who are not social workers, ethics can sometimes be unclear because other professions must adhere to their own code of ethics. Therefore, it is important for me to consult other social workers who encounter this ambiguity in working with other professionals to gain some insight into how to handle such situations so that I can remain compliant with the social work code of ethics.

Practice Behavior 2.4 Apply strategies of ethical reasoning to arrive at principled decisions I will communicate with my supervisor about what I would do in various situations in which there is an ethical dilemma and get feedback from my supervisor on what she would do in various situations in order to comply with the NASW Code of Ethics.
