Bellwork Topic: Keeping Teachers’ Trust and Avoiding Drama Your best friend in another mini-school just sent you a text message to meet by the bathrooms in another hallway. You ask your teacher for a restroom pass, she gives you one, and you go to meet your friend. Explain the poor choices in this scenario and describe what should have happened. List three situations where a student might be tempted to take advantage but decides to make the right decision when a teacher has trusted him/her. Look at #1. You got the message because he/she wants to tell you what someone has been posting about a guy/girl you like on social media. How do you avoid getting involved in drama in this situation? Cornell Notes: Why do we use this system? Why take notes?  Research indicates that unrehearsed information is forgotten in as little as 20 seconds and almost ½ of what is learned is forgotten within an hour.  Taking notes using the Cornell method is a great way to capture the most important information while reading texts or listening to a lecture.  Furthermore, it helps you retain more of what you learn.   Cornell notes were originally developed by Walter Pauk at Cornell University in the 1950’s in response to his student failing his classes.  By changing the way students were required to take notes in his class, Pauk was able to help his students improve their grades.  Cornell notes include a section for questions, notes, and a summary.  

Cornell Notes: Why do we use this system? Named for the university where a researcher discovered some students were learning more than others, this form of note taking starts with basic notes in any style, then adds two components: - QUESTIONS that can be answered by the content of the notes. These are written in the left-hand column of the Cornell note paper. Some teachers explain this to students as being "like Jeopardy -- you have the answers, and you come up with the questions." - SUMMARY of the key ideas in the notes. This is written at the end of each day's notes. Ideally it is done after an interval, such as writing the summary the following day before class meets again.

How to set up your Interactive Notebook 1. Label your first page "Unit Table of Contents." 2. Skip the next three pages.  Tomorrow you will glue some handouts onto these pages. 3. On the fifth page, create a Cornell Notes page. You will be taking notes on "Greek Roots."
