Conjunctions & Interjections

Conjunctions Connect words or word groups Coordinating conjunctions: and, but, or, nor, for, so Correlative conjunctions: either/or, neither/nor, both/and *Remember to place a comma before the conjunction when you write sentences this way: Ex. Craig gets into trouble, but he usually gets out of it.

Subordinating Conjunctions Connects an independent clause with one or more dependent clauses. Ex. Since, before, unless Ex. Because dimples were in fashion in 1896, Martin Goetz invented a dimple-making machine.

Interjections Word or group of words that express strong feelings. Place an exclamation point following the interjection if it is used to express strong emotion. Express milder emotions by placing a comma between the interjection and the rest of the sentence. Ex. Snoopy is at the typewriter again. Rats! I hope he doesn’t write another letter to the president.

Examples Sample Sentences: This cup of tea is delicious and very soothing. Kiyoko has to start all over again because she didn’t follow the professor’s instructions. Homer always wanted to join the play, but he didn’t have the guts to audition.
