Franklin D. Roosevelt and the New Deal Ch. 10 Sec. 1

FDR Democrat Charming personality Contracted polio as an adult Had his wife Eleanor conduct his business with the media, and she proved to be a very effective public speaker. Wins 1932 election in a landslide Promised Americans a “New Deal”

The First Hundred Days Needed to restore faith in banks and economy. Many feared he would take the nation off the gold standard to raise the value of the dollar. Caused people to pull money out of banks to convert it to gold. Bank runs: 4,000 banks collapsed by 1933 Bank holidays: close banks before they could be run out of business. Between March 9 and June 16, he passed 15 major acts to resolve the crisis. Ever since, a President’s success has been measured partially by his accomplishments in the First 100 Days.

The New Deal FDR had no ideology or real plan, but he was willing to try anything. His “Brain Trust”: advisers with differing opinions and points of view. No “Yes Men”. Fireside Chats: wanted Americans to hear him reassure them.

The New Deal Relief Recovery Reform The government will give direct help or relief to those who are suffering. Recovery The government will create and provide jobs to help people recover, and ease unemployment. Reform The government will regulate business, and create rules to ensure another crisis doesn’t happen again.
