Vocabulary Words U.S. Government Unit

Preamble - The introductory part of a constitution.

Article – A distinct often numbered section of a writing.

Amendment – A change to the Constitution.

Ratify – To approve, to formally accept.

Separation of Powers – The system of dividing powers and duties of a government into different branches.

Checks and Balances – Limits imposed on all branches of government by giving each the right to amend acts of the other branches.

Judicial Review – The Supreme Court decides the meaning of laws, how they are applied and if they break the rules of the Constitution.

Bicameral – having or consisting of two legislative branches.
