March A T H N E S Objective: To improve your ability to answer questions using the 6th grade COS. Goal: To obtain 3 points on each answer.   Each question should be answered as if it was a question on the state test. Answer thoroughly using numbers, words and/or pictures. Read your answers to make sure they make sense. Someone else should be able to read it and know what you were thinking while solving each problem. Write legibly within your given space. Write legibly!

Day 1 Starter 1 5.34 sec Starter 2 5.2 sec Starter 3 5 sec Starter 4 6.1sec Starter 5 5.342 sec This table shows how fast the starters on Auburn’s basketball team run. Using this data, put the runners in order from slowest to fastest. Using sentences, explain how you made your choices.

Day 2 The dimensions of a basketball court are 94 feet x 50 feet. What are the dimensions of the court in inches? Think how many inches in 1 foot. What is the perimeter and area of a basketball court? Explain how you got your answers.

Day 3 The board behind a basketball goal measures 72 inches x 42 inches. Convert these measurements into feet. What is the perimeter and area of the back board? Explain.

Day 4 The diameter of the circular goal is 18 inches. What is the radius of a basketball goal? Would you prefer to use a ball with the diameter of 17 in or 19 in? Why? Explain your reasoning.

Day 5 An adult size basketball goal should be 10 feet from the ground. How tall is a basketball goal in inches? How many goals would it take to reach 325.75 miles? How tall do you think someone would need to be in order to dunk the ball? d) How did you get your answers?

Day 6 When a player is fouled, they get to shoot alone from the free throw line which is 180 inches away from the goal. How far do they have to throw the ball to score? Yards? ________ Feet? ________ Prove your answers.

Day 7 The best basketball players are honored in the Hall of Fame in Massachusetts. Massachusetts is 1,971,000 meters from Alabama. What is the distance between the states in kilometers? If you drove 100 km an hour, about how long would it take you driving from Alabama to Massachusetts? Explain.

Day 8 If a map scale says 1 inch = 150 km, how far are Alabama and Massachusetts on that map in inches (use yesterdays answers)? Prove it.

Day 9 In the 2012 NCAA tournament, the 4 top teams are Kentucky (32-2), Syracuse (31-2), North Carolina (29-5), and Michigan State (27-7). What is the percentage of games won for each of the top teams? What is the probability that one of these 4 teams will win the tournament of 64 teams? *Don’t forget to explain your work & answers!

Day 9 The 2012 Kentucky basketball team consists of 2 Seniors, 1 Junior, 6 Sophomores and 6 Freshmen. Develop a histogram using this data. What percent of the team are Seniors? Juniors? Sophomores? Freshmen? *Be sure to show your work and explain your reasoning. Read it and make sure it makes sense.

Write your answers in decimals, fractions and percents. Day 11 On March 31, 2019 8 “elite” NCAA teams learned if they will compete in March Madness “final four”. Since Auburn was chosen to participate, what is the probability that they will win? If 4 teams from the SEC are selected for the tournament, what is the probability that an SEC team will win? Write your answers in decimals, fractions and percents.

How many fans were cheering on the other team? Day 12 At Alabama’s game in the NCAA tournament today, out of the 2455 fans, 56% of the fans were cheering them on. How many fans were cheering on the other team? Me 
