The Great State

State Branch: Job (What it does): State Legislature   State Governor State Supreme Court Passes laws Can enforce laws/veto bills Decide if laws violate the state constitution

2. What are state legislatures? The state’s lawmaking body

3. Who are state legislators? State’s lawmakers

How is the governor’s role similar to the president’s? He is the head of the executive department, can veto bills, and has departments that help him to enforce/carry out the laws.

5. What role does the state constitution play in state government? It’s the ‘law of the land’ and describes how the state will run and includes laws.

6. What is the difference between the initiative and referendum processes? Initiative process allows citizens to create ideas for laws Referendum process lets citizens vote on a law that the state legislature has already passed

7. What are three examples of services the state provides its citizens? Police Fire safety Child protective Services Roads Schools parks

8. Define infrastructure: The basic support structures that serve a geographic area- transportation, communication, power systems

9. What can grants be used for? To pay for improving airports, providing healthcare

10. How do states protect citizens? Regulating activities
