Warm-Up You have 10 new vocabulary words you will need to understand for Anthem. For each word, read the definition, then write your own sentence using the word correctly. If you have time, go back and draw pictures to help you better understand the meaning of the word.

Anthem and Ayn Rand Born in Russia Lived through the Russian Revolutions and onset of Communism – she hated that government. She thought America’s democracy was the ideal. She believes in objectivism. Her stories often focus on collectivism, individualism, and egoism.

Warm-Up: Journal If you lived in the world of Anthem, what job do you think the Council of Vocations would assign you based on your strengths and skills you could bring to your brothers? (Remember – it’s not based on choice or interest.) Would you like this job? Why or why not?

Reading Journal Assignment Use notebook paper. Date every entry! Don’t copy the questions. Write your answers in complete sentences. Keep a running log.

Ch. 1 Questions 1) Equality 7-2521 states that it is very unusual for men to reach the age of 45. Offer several possible explanations as to why life expectancy is so short in this society. 2) Clearly, Ayn Rand intended Equality to stand out from his “brothers.” Explain how she accomplishes this by contrasting his physical qualities and character traits with those of his fellow men. 3) Why does the Council of Vocations assign Equality 7- 2521 the job of street sweeper? Is it due to error, incompetence, or some more sinister motivation? Explain.

Ch. 2 Questions Find several examples of the ways in which this society tries to obliterate each individual’s mind (and self) by quashing personal choices, desires, and values. Of the whole range of feelings possible to man (joy, excitement, anger, embarrassment, etc.) why is fear the prevalent emotion in this society? What word is Equality struggling to recapture on page 49? In your opinion, why is mentioning this word the only crime punishable by death in this society?

Ch. 3 Questions 1. What does Equality discover in this chapter and why is this discovery important? 2. Outline some of the Council of Scholars’ beliefs, and Equality’s refutation of those beliefs.
