Physical Science - Introduction to Chemistry February 5, 2019

Describing Matter February 5, 2019 Objective: I can make scientific observations to describe matter.

Copy these seven questions into your notebook Copy these seven questions into your notebook. Skip two or more spaces so that you can write in the answers. You have three and a half (3 ½ ) minutes to do this What is chemistry? What is matter? What is the difference between mass and weight? Define “Thinking Skills.” What is observation? What are the two types of observations? What is inference?

the composition (make-up) of matter Chemistry The study of: the composition (make-up) of matter the changes that matter undergoes

occupies space (volume). What is matter? Anything that: has mass and occupies space (volume).

Mass vs Weight Mass: a measure of the amount of matter that an object contains. (SI unit kilogram, kg) Weight: The force with which the earth pulls on an object. (SI unit Newton, N)

In order to describe matter we have to first be able to THINK and make observations…

Observation Quiz

Observation Quiz

Scientific Thinking Thinking Skills – Skills that help a scientist attempt to understand the world around them.

Observation vs. Inference An observation is the description of an event by using any or all of the five senses. Qualitative – describes the observation Quantitative – measures the observation An inference is a conclusion or judgment based on observations but arrived at indirectly rather than directly.

Let’s practice making observations (both qualitative and quantitative) & inferences together…

List 2 observations and 2 inferences based on this picture.

List 2 observations and 2 inferences based on this picture.

List 2 observations and 2 inferences based on this picture.

Does seeing the entire picture help you make better inferences? Why?

Your turn to try #1: Make some observations (both qualitative and quantitative) and inferences based on this cartoon.

Your turn to try #2: Make some observations (both qualitative and quantitative) and inferences based on this cartoon.

Your turn to try #3: Make some observations (both qualitative and quantitative) and inferences based on this cartoon.

Turn your notebook into me…
