Wellness and Your Health Lesson 1

Parts of Health Health- the condition of your physical, mental/emotional and social well being. To be healthy all the parts of health must be kept in balance.

Physical Health Physical health describes the condition of your body. How to maintain your physical health Get 8 hours of sleep each night Eat a balanced diet with nutritious food Get plenty of physical activity Practice good hygiene-the practice of keeping clean Avoid drugs, alcohol and tobacco

Mental Health Mental health- how you deal with life’s demands. A mentally healthy person can Recognize and deal with stress in a positive way Accept new ideas Solve problems effectively

Emotional Health Emotional health- the way you recognize and deal with your feelings. To maintain emotional health Express your emotions in words rather than physically Show self control, think before acting Accept your strengths and weaknesses Respect yourself Deal with sadness in an appropriate and timely way.

Emotional Health Normal changes during your pre-teen and teen years can affect your emotional health Added responsibility in your life Normal changes in the body Experiencing a wide range of emotions is a normal and not always pleasant experience.

Social Health Social Health- the way that you interact with people. Your family has a huge impact on the support and development of your social health. Your social health will continue to develop over the course of your life. Relationships with others are important to healthy social development. Helps give you a sense of belonging and helps you feel good about yourself

Social Health Ways to improve social skills Be considerate of others and their needs Show respect to others Be dependable Support people you care about when they make right choices Express your true feelings Imagining how you would feel if you were in another person’s place Asking for help when you need it.

Wellness Wellness- the state of good health by balancing your physical, social and mental/emotional health.

Health Assessment A health assessment- is a set of questions that allows you to evaluate each of the parts of your health.

Assess Your Health Almost Always Some time Almost Never I am physically active regularly. I eat a variety of foods, including fruits and vegetables. I find it easy to relax and express my feelings. I have close friends or relatives in whom I can confide. I prepare for events that I know will be stressful to me. I avoid risky behavior I practice good hygiene.

Assess Your Health Scoring the assessment Give your self 4 points for every “Almost Always” Give your self 2 points for every “Some Time” Give your self 0 points for every “Almost Never” 23-28: you have great health habits 15-22: your health habits are good overall but there is room for improvement 7-14: many of your health habits need work 0-6: you are taking unnecessary risks with your health
