Age of Revolution Vocabulary Mr. Condry’s social studies class

Coup d'état a sudden, violent, and illegal seizure of power from a government.

Democracy a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.

Revolution a forcible overthrow of a government or social order in favor of a new system.

Salutary Neglect an American history term that refers to the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century British Crown policy of avoiding strict enforcement of parliamentary laws meant to keep American colonies obedient to England.

American Revolution a war fought from 1775-1783 and won by the 13 American colonies to achieve independence from Great Britain.

French Revolution uprising in France against the monarchy from 1789 to 1799 which resulted in the establishment of France as a republic.

Haitian Revolution took place between 1791-1804, is significant because it is the only country where slave freedom was taken by force, and marks the only successful slave revolt in modern times.

Latin America Revolution Wars of Independence during the late 18th and early 19th centuries and resulted in the creation of a number of independent countries in Latin America.
