Presentation transcript:

Once the scene has been secured, a lead investigator will start processing the crime scene area.

FIRST RULE Cardinal Rule Guard evidence against damage, contamination or loss and document everything Cardinal Rule “Eyes open, mouth closed, hands in pockets!”

In many cases there may be more than one crime scene! Primary Crime Scene: -where the crime occurred ex. the bank, the murder site etc. This may not be available to the police and may never be found. -usually gives more information if it can be found Secondary crime scene: Related to the crime but not where it occurred. This could be where a body was dumped or where a car was found that was used in the crime.

Processing the crime scene Forensic science begins at the crime scene Crime lab runs on physical evidence Physical evidence -any and all objects that can establish that a crime has been committed or can provide a link between a crime and its victim or a crime and its perpetrator

SECURE AND ISOLATE The first officer on the scene needs to protect the area and rope or barricade it off Detain the person who reported the crime. They may be a witness or a suspect.
