Korean War Quick Facts 1950 –1953 Began when North Korea invaded South Korea. UN Security Council passed a resolution authorizing force to preserve the independence of South Korea. North Korea and China v. South Korea and United Nations (mostly US) President Truman called it a police action. Congress never declared war Ended with an armistice rather than a peace treaty.

Korean War Casualties Estimated 1.2 million people killed (mostly Koreans and Chinese) Over 33,000 Americans killed.
