Magazine Project Pitch – Emily Mynheer

My Magazine and Target Audience My magazine is aimed at young girls, aged 4-6. Their interests will hopefully be similar to the contents of my magazine; drawing, colouring, baking, and so on. It will feature lots of things young girls enjoy, such as baking, colouring, drawing and so on. It will include step-by-step guides and tutorials, along with interviews and stories. As well as being education and beneficial to progress young girls reading abilities, it will also be fun for them to look through. It will be released every two weeks and priced at £2.99; my primary researched suggested this was a reasonable price people would be willing to pay.

Name Ideas When creating my magazine, I had to consider all aspects, such as the title. I created a small list of ideas, before breaking them down and deciding to name my magazine ‘Daisy’s’. I did this so it would seem the magazine was owned by Daisy, the character I wish to incorporate into my magazine. Daisy will be a cartoon flower who will follow the reader throughout the book, and the type of flower will have a significant impact on the themes of drawing, colouring, other activities and the general design of the magazine.

Colours and Fonts The main colours that will be used for my magazine are yellow and white, as these are the colours of the flower I want to use, however I also want to include some pastel pinks, purples and blues so my magazine still clearly directs its target audience. The fonts for my masthead title I have looked at are as follows; Daisy’s I decided to go with the first font as its bold and clear, so the reader will always be able to recognise the name of the magazine.

Advertisement My magazine will be advertised online on websites for children, for example Club Penguin; this is a sight that’s very popular for young children, but parents are also familiar with it. Another place it will be advertised is within stores that sell toys, as this is obviously a place where children and parents will both be. The main method of advertising will be through posters, similar to the cover page with clues as to what is in the contents with eye catching images and colours, and features that will attract the target audiences’ attention.

Unique Selling Point The unique selling point of my magazine is the use of the character ‘Daisy’ used throughout every issue. I wanted to include this because although other magazines often incorporate characters into their prints, I want to use the same character within every issue and have yet to find a magazine that does this aimed at the same target audience as mine. I feel the reader will be able to develop a relationship with the character and it will encourage them to continue buying each issue.

Design Here I have included my flat plan and designs for the front cover, contents page and back; Front Cover Content Page (double page spread) Back Page

Main Stories Within my magazine, I will include an interview piece and feature article. My interview piece will be made up, interviewing a popular children’s television show character. I will ask them simple questions but also try to involve some humour to appeal to the young reader. The feature article will be all a story all about Daisy, the main character, and an adventure she goes on. However, some spaces will be blank, giving the reader a chance to interact with the article.

How Will it Be Successful? My magazine will be successful because it will appeal to young girls but also their parents; as well as being fun, there is an educational element. I will include chances for the reader to work on expanding their vocabulary with the use of finishing and filling in a story, but will also make it fun with the use of activities such as colouring, along with the interaction of the character Daisy. It is reasonably priced, again appealing to parents who may be buying the magazine for a younger child.
