Graph! Video
Reflection/Share Out What do you know about graphing linear equations?
Learning Intention/Success Criteria LI: We are learning the different ways to represent a function SC: I know how to -identify the four representation of functions -move between the four representations of a function -graph and identify ordered pairs -evaluate expressions -evaluate functions from tables, graphs, equations, and context
EQ: What are the four ways to represent a function? 5/24/2019
Linear Function The equation of a function representing a straight line. Slope-Intercept Form The equation of a line in the form: f(x) = mx + b slope Y-intercept
Slope Indicates the steepness of a line Indicates if the line is tilted uphill or downhill Represented by the letter “m” Y-Intercept The point at which the graph intersects the y-axis Represented by the letter “b”
Four Ways to Represent a Function 1. Symbolical Representation A function written as an equation 2. Visual Representation A function drawn as a graph 3. Numerical Representation A function written as a table or a set of ordered pairs
4. Verbal Representation A function written in words, often depicting a real world situation
Example 1: Using the verbal representation, find the symbolic, visual, and numerical representations At the Makai parking garage, it costs $5 to bring your car into the garage plus $2 for every hour the car is parked. Slope: Y-Intercept: Equation: 2 5 y = 2x + 5
Hours Charge 1 2 3 4 5 5 7 9 11 13 15
24 20 16 12 Charge 8 4 1 2 3 4 5 6 Hours
Work in your groups to come up with the answers for the slides you are assigned. You will be presenting your findings to the class upon finishing with your group
