n The Civil War was not just about freeing the slaves it was about whether states rights or the Federal Government was stronger.
Slaves where not treated fairly by their owners Slaves where not treated fairly by their owners. Their owners had them live on a plantation in a shack and usually fed them stale bread and a small amount of low quality meat , vegetables or fruits. Slaves were not paid. n
When slaves escaped to the northern states they were either returned to their owners or got put in the Union Armies . In his inaugural address, delivered on March 4th, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed that it was his duty to maintain the Union. n

President Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves in the southern states with the Emancipitation Proclamation on January 1st, 1863,five days after the Civil War ended. n
