Form of Mass Media 2 Film

Origins Film is a fairly new medium for communication. It is hard to be sure exactly who invented film, but many historians say that the Lumiere brothers were responsible after they picked up a patent for the Cinématographe in 1895 (effectively a camera) The first edited short films started to appear around 1900. (A Trip To The Moon is a famous one, by Georges Méliès) The first feature film (full length, 1hr+) is considered to be The Story of the Kelly Gang from 1906. The first film with a soundtrack was in 1927 (The Jazz Singer). Within 2 years almost every Hollywood movie had sound.

Origins Colour had actually existed in film in 1912 (much earlier than TV), but it was only in the 1930s when it became common. There have been many changes since then: Cinemascope (1953) Surround Sound (1940) 3D. What year? 1922! (The Power of Love). Avatar was 2009! IMAX (1970) CGI (1960s) Digital Film. Which film and year? 1999….Star Wars:The Phantom Menace High Frame Rate, 48fps. Which film and year? 2012…The Hobbit What is next? Occulus Rift?
