Tests of Significance Section 10.2
Test of Significance Used to assess the evidence provided by data about some claim concerning a population
Null Hypothesis H0 Says there is no effect or no change in the population
Alternative Hypothesis Ha Describes the alternative to the null hypothesis Uses the wording of the problem
P-value The probability under the normal curve to the right of the observed x bar. Small P-values are evidence against H0 Large P-values fail to give evidence against H0
Significance Level Used to determine if results are statistically significant Rule of thumb – statistically significant if P-value is less than .05
Significance Test Identify population of interest and parameter to draw conclusions from. State null and alternative hypotheses (use words and symbols)
Choose inference procedure, verify conditions If conditions are met, calculate test statistic and find P-value Interpret results in context of problem
