International Factors

Each of the following is a form of organised competition except: Round robin Seeding League Ladder (1 mark)

Competitions are arranged in different ways, including the 'knock-out' format. State two advantages of using the 'knock-out' format. (2 marks) • it can cater for a large number of entries • high excitement levels as losers are excluded • relatively easy to organise and run • teams play at their best from the start of the competition or risk being knocked out • competition is quicker.

Describe one disadvantage of using the 'knock-out' format (2 marks) • a team may only play one game/ there are no second chances available • a good team may get knocked out in early rounds/ if you play the strongest team in the first round • some teams will get more games than others/ this would be unfair • could be unfair/ because you might be away which is harder for most teams.

London will host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012 London will host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012. Describe two advantages that London may gain through hosting these events. (4 marks) • The provision of new facilities/ which can be used after the games. • Making a profit/ through merchandising. • Increased number of visitors/ bringing money into the country. • Raise the profile of the country/ for attracting future events or by winning more medals. • Increased nationalism/ feel good factor. • More employment/ short-term in construction or long-term in tourism. • Changed infrastructure/ improved transport links.
