Cylinder Technique Project Vocabulary/Technique

Wedging Rocking the clay in a spiral motion to get the air bubbles out.

Centering Pushing the clay to the middle of the wheel with wet hands. Right Hand = Side Left Hand = Top corner If it starts to feel sticky you need more water.

Opening Up Using your right hand to make the first hole in the middle of your centered clay.

Draw Back Using your right hand to pull the clay open. Straight back at six o’clock.

Compress Bottom Using a damp sponge to firmly press on the bottom of the clay. Even and Flat.

Compress Rim Using your fingers to make the rim edge of your cylinder even. Alligator and Caterpillar Technique

Pulling Up Using your fingers to raise the clay into a cylinder. Butterfly Technique

Final Forming Using the rib tool to shape the cylinder. Removal of finger lines on the side.

Trim Removal of bell bottoms on the bottom edge.

Cut Using the wire cutter to release the cylinder from the wheel head. Push Down with your thumbs then back towards you.
