Why? Speech and debate in high school has gotten to over 150 members We have state, national, and international tournaments, as well as invitationals This club will help you get a foothold on speaking effectively and debating persuasively

You should join if… You like the argue You like to win You like to stay updated everything that’s going on in the world we live in You like going to tournaments with all your friends to places like Berkeley or Stanford You enjoy giant trophies

What can we do for you? Areas of focus: Parliamentary debate (or parli): debate of general knowledge and on the spot critical thinking Structure revolves around the above skills: Topic announced, 20 minutes to prepare, 38 minutes of solid debating, 19 minutes for each side 2 versus 2 Topics range from foreign policy to economic stimulus Policy debate: Debate using vast amounts of evidence and arcane speaking speeds Structure: Months to prepare, 64 minutes of solid debating and 8 minutes total of in-round prep

Parliamentary debate Two sides randomly assigned: Affirmative and Negation (sometimes Proposition and Opposition) Resolution given in the form of a statement Affirmative affirms the statement; upholds it Negation denies the statement; strikes it down Whichever side does this better wins the debate Parli requires knowledge of world events and the ability to analyze them
