Sociocultural Integration IB HL

Diasporas Diaspora refers to the forced or voluntary dispersal of any population sharing common racial, ethnic, or cultural identity, after leaving their settled territory and migrating to a new region. For example: Irish in New York and Boston, and the Indians in the UK. The Mexican labourers in the USA are another example.

Britain and USA Britain: Of all Irish-born people living abroad, 75% are in Britain. 1.7 million people in Britain are born to Irish parents. The 3rd generation Irish community could be around 6 million. USA: 10.8% claim Irish ancestry (7 times the population of Ireland itself). Irish born people in USA=156,000. California, New York, Pennsylvania, Florida, and Illinois have the most.

Canada and Argentina Canada: First generation Irish in Canada= 28,500. 3.8 million say they are from Irish ancestry. Argentina: In the late 1900’s, 45,000 Irish arrived there. 20,000 settled there and the rest moved back to the USA. In Latin America, 300,000-500,000 have some Irish ancestry, mainly living in Argentina, Brazil, Central America, and Uruguay.

Australia and New Zealand Australia: Has the 3rd largest Irish-born population outside Ireland. First generation Irish there=74,500. During the 18th and 19th century, 300,000 free immigrants and 45,000 prisoners sailed to Australia from Ireland. New Zealand: First generation Irish here=11,000.

Impact of the Irish Diaspora Young workforce leaves Ireland. Perceived as hard workers. Associated with positions as Fire-Fighters, Church Leaders, Police Officers, and Politicians. In USA after German-Americans, the Irish are the 2nd largest ethnic group there with over 44 million. Most cities celebrate St Patrick’s Day
