Presentation transcript:

Foils in of Mice and Men A foil is a character that shows qualities that are in contrast with the qualities of another character. The objective is to highlight the traits of the other character.

Lennie and George Opposites Attract Smaller in size Quick-witted, good on his toes Responsible for himself AND Lennie Realist Knows the world prays on the weak and Lennie is that Hard, Traditionally Masculine Big, tall, and strong doesn't know when to use strength Less capable of taking care of himself Idealist Always sees the good in people and situations Loves soft things Other examples of this kind of foil:

Crooks and curley's wife Curley's wife is desperate for attention while crooks tries his best to stay away from people Curley's Wife Crooks  "She smiled archly and twitched her body. "Nobody can blame a person for lookin', " she said."  Crooks said sharply, "You got no right to come in my room. This here's my room. Nobody got any right in here but me."

Lennie and Curley Curley is provocative and hot tempered Lennie on the other hand, is unconfrontational and has virtually no temper. Curley tries to keep pushing Lennie, while Lennie isnt even aware of what Curly is up to. "Curley's like a lot of little guys. He hates big guys" - page 26

Carlson and candy Carlson made very rash descisions throughout the story like when he shot Candy's dog because it smelled bad, while Candy lived with the dog for many years and took good care of it. Carlson does not have tons of money and must keep working while Candy saved up tons of money to eventually buy himself his own home. Carlson said, "Well looka here Slim. I been thinking'. That dog of Candy's is so God damn oldhe can hardly walk. Stinks like hell, too.(pg 36)"

Theorize The author used foils to show the extreme differences between two different characters. For example, the wit of George compared to Lennie's ignorance allows Lennie's trait to be a major part of the plot. If we did not have George as the foil of Lennie, it would be unclear of how severely mentally handicapped Lennie was, which could have caused him to be pictured  This Photo by Unknown author is licensed under CC BY-ND.
