The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian Tips for writing your essay
Quick Fixes The title of the book should be in italics. Do NOT underline or bold any writing in your essay, including the title. The first time you mention the book, call it The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. After that, you can call it Absolutely True Diary or the novel. You do not need to include page numbers for non-quoted material.
Quotes If you quote the book, whether it’s at the beginning of your essay (your hook) or as part of your evidence, you can’t just drop the quote in. NOT GOOD: “After all, I wanted to hit something when I threw that ancient book.” GOOD: In the beginning of the book, Junior gets extremely frustrated with the state of the reservation school. Alexie writes that he “wanted to hit something” because he is so mad. Note how I just included part of the sentence – that’s MUCH more effective than dropping a whole sentence in.
Quotes To cite your quotes, just add a page number in parenthesis after the quote. Do NOT include a p. or the word page. In the beginning of the book, Junior gets extremely frustrated with the state of the reservation school. Alexie writes that he “wanted to hit something” because he is so mad (32).
Quotes Your quotes should be NO MORE than a sentence. If they are, cut them down!
