DRAW A BOHR MODEL OF NEUTRAL SODIUM ATOM START OUT BY IDENTIFYING THE NUMBER OF PROTONS, ELECTRONS,& NEUTRONS ------- “PEN” FIND SODIUM ON THE PERIODIC TABLE TO GET INFORMATION Atomic number Atomic mass

REMEMBER IN A NEUTRAL ATOM … PROTONS = ELECTRONS RECALL….. APE MAN to determine the “PEN” Atomic Number Mass Number = - Protons Atomic Number or = Electrons Neutrons _____ P _____ E _____ N 11 11 12 Mass Number– Atomic number = Neutrons 23 – 11 = 12

DRAW THE BOHR MODEL NOW USING THE “PEN” INFORMATION 11 11 11 p 12 n 12 Place electrons on energy shells 1st level = 2 electrons 2nd level = 8 electrons 3rd level = 18 electrons

SO THERE IS 1 VALENCE ELECTRON!!! Now determine The number of VALENCE ELECTRONS VALENCE ELECTRONS ARE THE ELECTRONS IN THE OUTER ENERGY LEVEL. SO THERE IS 1 VALENCE ELECTRON!!!
