Hundred Days Campaign and the Paris Peace Conference The End of the War Hundred Days Campaign and the Paris Peace Conference

End of the War Two Major Events in 1917- Russian Revolution- Russia pulls out of the war 1917 The United States of America enters the war (Lusitania) March 1918 Major German Offensive- very successful

The Hundred Days Campaign August 1918- with the arrival of the Americans, the allies launch a series of attacks Canada was given charge of many attacks and almost all were successful Arras, Cambrai and Valenciennes- all under Arthur Currie German forces and material were exhausted- no reserves, no troops and no supplies Nov. 1918 Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicates Armistice Nov. 11 1918, 11:00 am

Paris 1919 Paris 1919- world leaders (30 countries) meet to discuss peace terms All countries came with their own agendas (uhoh…), Germany and its allies were not allowed to participate Important moment for Canada- Canada was given its own seat, its own representation at the conference- we get to sit at the adult table!

Treaty of Versailles Final Treaty- Versailles- bit of a blame game- What do you think France wanted? Britain? USA? “The War to End all Wars” How do you do that exactly… See handout pg 57 Think History

League of Nations Collective Security- if one member is under attack, all members will come to the aid Not welcomes by everyone, the USA did not join it (despite it being President Wilson’s idea) We will see how successful this league was at preventing war…well there is a WWII, so we know it isn’t very successful
