Acid and Base Ch 15 and Naming of acids 1.In a binary acid, the negative anion ends in -ide. The name begins with the prefix hydro-, stem and.
Naming Acids and Bases. Naming Acids Acid- contains one or more hydrogen atoms and produces hydrogen ions (H + ) when dissolved in water. General formula.
Acids and Bases Arrhenius Definitions: – When reacting with water, Acids release hydrogen ions (ex: HNO 3 ) Bases release hydroxide ions (ex: NaOH) Salts.

WARM UP 1.NH 3 is a base under which of the definitions of acids and bases? Which definition does it not fit into?
 Acid  A compound that produces hydrogen ions (H + ) when dissolved in water  An ionic compound Cation = H + Anion = monatomic or polyatomic ions Only.
Binary Acids  A few examples:  HF – Hydrofluoric Acid  HCl – Hydrochloric Acid  H 2 S – Hydrosulfuric acid For now we will stick with Arrhenius’ theory.

The Rules for Naming and Formula Writing Naming Acids and Bases The Rules for Naming and Formula Writing

Naming an Acid Consider the acid “HX” where H is hydrogen and X is the anion. RULE #1 When name of anion (X) ends in “ide” Acid name begins with “hydro” Followed by stem of anion Followed by “ic acid” Example: HCl

Naming an Acid Consider the acid “HX” where H is hydrogen and X is the anion. RULE #2 When name of anion (X) ends in “ite” Name begins with stem of anion Followed by “ous acid” Example: HNO2

Naming an Acid Consider the acid “HX” where H is hydrogen and X is the anion. RULE #3 When name of anion (X) ends in “ate” Name begins with stem of anion Followed by “ic acid” Example: HClO3

Practice Naming! You try: H2SO4 HBr H2SO3 H3PO4 HClO HClO4

Naming Bases Name bases exactly like you would any other ionic compound. Example: NaOH = sodium hydroxide
