Characteristics of Living things

All living things have cells “Basic unit of life” Unicellular- made of only one cell Multicellular- made of 2 or more cells Video

All living things have DNA inside of their cells Provides instructions for making proteins DNA is passed from parents to offspring (Heredity) Also called the “instructions for life”

Living things use energy Take in energy from food/ sunlight Metabolism Ingestion; digestion; cellular respiration; excretion

Living things reproduce All living things come from other living things 2 Types: Sexual- requires 2 parents to produce offspring Asexual- 1 parent to produce offspring

Living things grow, develop and die Grow = get larger Develop = change in form (egg-tadpole-frog) Life span/cycle= from birth to death

Living things sense and respond to changes Change that affects an organism = stimulus Ex- Light; gravity Response- change caused by a stimulus Ex-Chill bumps; sweating

HOMEOSTASIS Maintain a stable internal environment When you are sick you want to go home & stay
